The resort of La Tania is often overlooked when it comes to a ski chalet holiday in the Three Valleys. Most often we receive requests for chalets in the better-known resorts of Meribel and Courchevel 1850. Yet for families and groups of friends, La Tania has a great many good value chalets allowing access to the worlds most extensive ski area without breaking the bank.
My first two ski seasons were spent as a chalet host and laterally as a chef in La Tania (quiet some years ago now), so I know it better than most and have a very strong affection for the resort. So what’s so great about La Tania? Pretty much everything as it ticks so many boxes on the wish list for a ski holiday in France.
The La Tania gondola whisks you quickly up the mountain to Praz-Juget from where you take a six-person ski lift to the slopes above Courchevel 1850 or take a quick two person lift that links to the resort of Méribel and beyond. The ski slopes above La Tania and nearby La Praz offer long tree lined runs of varying degrees of difficulty and offer shelter in bad weather.
Returning back to resort or your chalet at the end of the day is via a red, blue or green run making it an option for skiers of all abilities. The main village has an area for complete beginners and although a relatively low resort at 1350m, the excellent snow making facilities ensure the resort can operate in early and late season.
The resort center is attractive, compact and traffic free so once you get to the piste and ski lift area you can let the children play without too much concern. The beginner area in the village caters well for children and the lift is free. There is a better beginner area at the top of the gondola though this may require down lifting until the skier progresses to the home green run. The village has a small supermarket, a couple of tourist shops and several bars and restaurants.
Though a small resort La Tania still has a lot to offer, with restaurants such at Les Marmottons offering informal dining with pizza and local Savoyard specialties to fine dining at Le Facon offering Michelin stared cuisine. For après ski or good old English pub grub try Pub Le Ski Lodge, it’s a firm favourite with returning guests who enjoy a lively après session with live music and maybe the chance to see owner Tim play his French horn rather badly on the terrace.
