Discover the joys of Meribel Village

After focusing a recent blog on Meribel Raffort, one of the resort villages of Meribel, this time we turn our attention to a slightly better-known destination in the valley, Meribel Village.

When people think of Meribel Village they often get it confused with the main resort of Meribel Centre, thinking they are one and the same. Whilst they both connect very easily, it is important to understand the differences and also why Meribel Village should always be considered when booking a ski holiday to Meribel.

Meribel Village is only 2.5km and a 5 minute drive to the main resort of Meribel Centre, and offers a charming location for your next ski holiday. Though the village is relatively small, it provides everything you need for an enjoyable ski holiday. Once you discover the joys of this compact village, we are sure it will become a perennial favourite destination, as it has for many of our clients.

Starting your day from Meribel Village couldn’t be easier with its own chairlift that whisks you out of the village to start your day of exploring Meribel and the surrounding valleys. The Golf Chairlift is located in the centre of this beautiful village and as it mostly services the surrounding accommodation it does make for shorter queues in the morning, even on those busy peak holiday weeks.

Depending on your ski route for the day you may find you don’t even go to the Chaudanne, Meribels’ main ski lift hub. Once you disembark the Golf Chairlift take a second chairlift called the ‘Altiport’, which will take you to the Altiport area, a great spot for beginners to practice linking their turns. Otherwise you can take the Loze Chairlift and head over to Courchevel for a ski day. Once you’re at the end of a long day of exploring The Three Valleys a well-maintained blue run will take you right back to the village centre.

Being a relatively small village, we love the fact that most of the chalets are within easy walking distance to the Golf Chairlift, so no long walks in ski boots required. It should be mentioned though that currently there are no group ski lessons available in Meribel Village. Therefore, if ski lessons are required, we would recommend a private ski instructor who can meet you in the village, otherwise numerous group lessons are available in Meribel Centre.

If you are staying in a catered ski chalet in Meribel Village you will most likely have access to a driver service to ensure everyone gets to their ski lessons in the morning. If you chose self-catered accommodation, then there is an excellent free ski bus service from the centre of the village to the main ski meeting points at Meribel Chaudanne. You can also ski (having. taken the Golf Chair) to the main ski school meeting point depending on ability and times of lessons.

As already mentioned, Meribel Village does have all of the amenities you need for you ski holiday. The village is home to what is quite possibly the best ‘Boulangerie” (Bakery) in the whole of Meribel. Le Village des Pains has a vast array of French breads on offer along with morning pastries, croque monsieur, tarts and cakes. I’m personally a huge fan of the croissant aux amandes, a delicious twist on the original croissant. It’s well worth a wander to the boulangerie in the morning to start your day in true French style with fresh Baguette and pastries for breakfast. The village also has a small SPAR supermarket and a ski rental shop.

Just because you are not in Meribel Centre doesn’t mean you don’t have access to great après ski and live music. Lodge du Village (LDV) and La Terrace jointly host daily après ski from 4pm with live music on the terrace no matter the weather, hot chocolate and home-made van chaud will keep you warm in the early season whilst the later season brings sunshine and a bottle of Prosecco to the terrace. For those who like to let their hair down after dinner LDV ramps it up once a week for an evening of great tunes, toffee vodka and dancing the night away.

Located in the heart of the village Le Terrace is not just a chilled après destination it is also a brasserie offering a varied menu showcasing tastes from around the world. Whilst you will still find a traditional Savoyard Tartiflette on the lunch menu and a Fondue on the evening menu you also have Teriyaki Noodles, Katsu Burger or perhaps you’d just prefer a snack of truffle fries.

If you’re looking for a more traditional French dining experience then Le Bo a Mil is a definite. Tucked away down a side street this wonderful converted cellar certainly brings a taste of authentic France to your holiday. The restaurant serves a typical local savoyard menu ranging from raclette and fondue to French onion soup and steaks. It isn’t a hurried experience, more one to savour and enjoy.

The accommodation on offer in Meribel Village is certainly varied with everything from small functional apartments, rustic and cosy chalets for small groups of friends and families to larger modern chalets packed with entertainment and spa facilities. There really are too many excellent options to show in just one blog but some we feel show the variety and quality on offer in this charming village are:

This catered chalet comes with an experienced chef focused on preparing fresh and delicious food morning and night, whilst your host ensures your glass is never empty. MY TOP TIP: IF you’re staying in self-catered accommodation and need to go to group ski lesson in the morning in Meribel Centre, then before you arrive to resort why not pre-book a daily taxi to take you to your ski lessons. Ask Nicky in our office for a taxi phone number.
